Our recommended travel options
A holiday at one of our Châteaux is about relaxed days with family and friends. The journey should feel easy and set the right mood from the start.
Over the years we’ve welcomed hundreds of groups just like yours, so we’ve put together the most practical routes by air and train, plus clear advice on what works best.
Once you’re here, having your own transport (cars / minivans) makes all the difference. It gives you the freedom to pop to the bakery for warm baguettes in the morning, visit local markets, go for a wine tasting, or simply come and go as you please.
The information provided below is less relevant for guests driving from elsewhere in continental Europe.
Distances and driving times
The distances provided below are for the fastest route, not necessarily the shortest.
Driving times are quoted as a range depending on normal traffic conditions at different times of day.
Air travel
Recommended airports
Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) & Paris Orly (ORY)
Most long-haul flights arrive at CDG, with European flights often providing a choice of both Paris airports.
If Orly flights are available, fit your schedule and you’re continuing by hire car, it’s often the smarter choice — you’ll join the A6 southbound almost immediately and be on your way to Burgundy in no time.
Lyon Saint-Exupéry (LYS)
For many of our guests arriving from across Europe, Lyon is the most convenient gateway. Direct flights make it straightforward, and it’s the closest major airport to all three of our Châteaux.
If there are no direct flight options to Lyon, we generally don’t recommend connecting via Paris; driving from the capital is usually far quicker and more relaxing overall.
Geneva (GVA)
Geneva offers another excellent option, particularly if you’re combining your Burgundy stay with time in Switzerland or the Alps. As with Lyon, direct flights work best and keep the journey simple.
Car rental at airports
All three airports are served by the full range of international car rental companies. Most offer a wide selection of vehicles, including minivans that seat up to 9 people (including the driver) — ideal for family groups or friends travelling together on an exclusive use château vacation. Booking early is wise, particularly for larger vehicles during peak season.

Train travel
Recommended train stations
High-speed TGV services can be an efficient choice in two main situations:

When flying into Paris CDG or Orly, or after a stay in the city

When travelling from the southern France, Italy or Spain
We don't generally recommend travelling by train from Lyon and Geneva airports. The journeys involve convoluted connections and it's quicker, and more relaxing, to simply rent a car at the airport and drive to your Château.
High speed trains - 'TGV'
We only recommend booking high-speed TGV trains (Train à Grande Vitesse). These trains reach speeds of up to 320 km/h on dedicated high-speed lines and offer much faster journeys, compared to regional or intercity trains (such as TER) which follow routes with multiple stops and connections.
Whatever the reservation platform you choose to use, it's always best to double-check that you're booking a TGV service, often called 'InOui', specifically. Choosing the right train makes all the difference to a relaxed start to your holiday in Burgundy.
From Paris : Gare de Lyon > Le Creusot TGV - 1h20
Firstly, a quick station name clarification!

Gare de Lyon is in Paris (not to be confused with the city of Lyon)

The full name for the arrival station is “Le Creusot – Montceau-les-Mines – Montchanin TGV”. We shorten it here, but use the complete name when booking to avoid confusion with the ordinary Le Creusot town station.
Journey time between Paris Gare de Lyon and Le Creusot TGV is only 1h20. See the table for car / taxi transfer times from Le Creusot to the different Châteaux.
If you are arriving at Paris CDG or Orly and travelling straight down, you will need to transfer from the airport to Gare de Lyon in central Paris. We cover the best options in detail in our Digital Guidebook, which is sent once your reservation is confirmed.
From southern France, Italy and Spain : Mâcon TGV
When travelling from the south, you can save some time by booking your journey to Mâcon-Loché TGV (the station is one stop before Le Creusot TGV).
Don’t default to Dijon!
Le Creusot is a small town and not an obvious location for a TGV station, so many of our guests assume that Dijon, the capital of Burgundy, is the better option. While there is a TGV service to Dijon, the journey from Paris takes a little longer and the drive from Dijon to the Châteaux is significantly longer than from Le Creusot. So unless you’re planning a mustard pilgrimage, choose Le Creusot TGV.
Car rental at TGV stations
There are two car rental companies at Le Creusot TGV and one at Mâcon TGV, so the choice of vehicles may be limited compared to major airports. We recommend contacting the agencies well in advance if you are looking to rent minivans or larger cars.

For those who prefer a relaxed, door-to-door arrival — or who need occasional transport during the stay — we have negotiated special rates with Taxi Lylou, a reliable local company based in southern Burgundy with a varied fleet suited to groups:

The minivans provide very good value for a group but luggage space can be limited when 7-8 passengers are onboard.

A gentle but important reminder!
While taxis work well for specific journeys, having your own car(s) or minivan(s) remains essential for the everyday enjoyment of a château holiday. The freedom to come and go as your group pleases is part of what makes a stay here feel so effortless and personal.

Advice for tour operators
Managing your group travel
Best options and avoiding the pitfalls…
We regularly welcome small independent tour operators who design accompanied, themed holidays based at one of our Châteaux — whether wine discovery tours, gastronomy workshops, or other specialised experiences. With at least one organiser travelling with the group, these stays work smoothly and we’re always happy to support your planning.
Because your clients are often not driving themselves, arrival and on-site transport deserve careful thought. The Châteaux are located in peaceful rural settings, with access roads and entrance gates better suited to smaller vehicles than large coaches.
Two practical approaches
1/ Group arrival together from a single departure point
Keeping the group together simplifies logistics and sets a relaxed tone from the start. Two options tend to work best :
• Renting self-drive minivans
If two organisers (or accompanying staff) are comfortable driving, a pair of 9-seater minivans (including the driver) usually handles the whole group plus luggage comfortably. These are widely available at our recommended airports and provide excellent flexibility for excursions throughout the week. Many TOs find this the most practical and cost-effective solution.
• Private coach or minivans with driver/s
A chauffeur-driven coach or minivan can feel convenient for transfers and daily outings. However, a few important considerations apply:

You will need to arrange accommodation and meals for the driver.

Daily driving hours are legally limited, which can affect your programme.

Vehicle size is critical. Coaches larger than approximately 20-person capacity will not fit through the Château gates. Larger vehicles also struggle on some of the minor country roads.

Overall, relatively expensive.
2/ Clients travelling independently and meeting at the Château
This arrangement is often simpler. The general travel recommendations in the sections above apply directly. You may still wish to arrange a minivan for the stay (or for collecting train arrivals), giving you independent transport for group activities and day trips.
Taxis are suitable for occasional transfers, but for accompanied group stays we strongly recommend having at least one dedicated vehicle available throughout the stay, particularly for day-to-day flexibility.
