Sleeping Beauty Castle...

Entirely renovated by Kasteliades between February 2022 and June 2023. Opening 10 July 2023.
Overlooking the small village of Burnand, our Château of approximately 900m2 built over different periods from the 14th to the 19th century is embellished with a 13ha park including 9ha of forest. The castle being built on a dominant position you will enjoy a superb view of the mountains, the village and the valley. Many hiking and cycling paths leave from the entrance of the Château for walks in the forest in the town of Burnand. The medieval town of St Gengoux le National is 5 minutes away and offers all amenities (restaurants, supermarket, bakers, butcher etc). Tournus, gastronomic capital of southern Burgundy with its starred restaurants is about 20 minutes away.

The place is ideal for jogging, walking and cycling from the Château.
In 2023 the completely restored castle offers on the 1st floor 5 luxurious bedrooms for two people with an “ensuite” bathroom + a single bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, and a children’s bedroom.
To add two more bedrooms to the total sleeping capacity, in 2023 only, the property is rented together with its 120m2 hunting lodge located 20 meters behind the Chateau. It has 2 double bedrooms with a shared bathroom, as well as living room/equipped kitchen.
Total capacity of the property in 2023: 8 bedrooms. 7 bathrooms. 15 people (+ 1 small room for a child).

The Château's kitchen is spacious and very well equipped.

Happiness is in the park

The Château is located in the heart of a very beautiful 13-hectare park, including 9 hectares of forest. The heated swimming pool and its terrace offer you a breathtaking view of the mountains and the valley.
A car park allows about ten vehicles to park.
The Château enjoys great privacy without any opposite.

Authenticity and Comfort

Its atypical architecture will not leave lovers of "old stones" insensitive.
The living rooms on the ground floor and some bedrooms have superb painted ceilings of Renaissance origin or restored in the 19th century. All the rooms have kept the noble materials of yesteryear: old parquet floors, French ceilings, fireplaces, period doors and windows...
The decoration and furniture have been chosen with the greatest care, a true marriage of excellence between tradition and modernity.

A page of history

large (1)
The Château de Burnand has had a rich history. It is close to the medieval city of Saint Gengoux le National, which was known as the King's favorite resort in the 18th century because of its "Fountain of Youth".
The superb glazed Burgundian tile roof of the Château de Burnand rises gracefully above the village. The castle is now often referred to as "Sleeping Beauty's Castle".
The oldest part (basement) dates from the 13th or 14th century. The oldest documents known to date cite the Cajod family as the owners during the 15th century. Originally from Bresse and Mâcon the Cajod became the lords of Burnand in 1453. Their emblem is still in a stone facade of the castle today. At some point in the 17th century, the castle served as a priory for an Augustinian monastic community. The monks lived in the castle for around 150 years. Various architectural details remind us of that time.
 Chronology
-13-14th century. Origin of the basement of the Château and first constructions.
-1525: first mention of the seigniory when Philibert Cajod, belonging to a family of soldiers who had distinguished themselves in the service of Saulx-Tavannes, acquired the estate.
-1625 One of the Cajot lords is killed during a campaign in Italy where he fought in the Uxelles regiment (lord Cormatin).
-1642: Charlotte de Brie, widow of Philibert III Cajod, donates the castle to the Congregation of Carmelites (Barefoot) Augustins, a mendicant order.
-1643-1790 Between 3 and 9 monks reside in the castle, which was transformed into a priory. The monks exploited the castle and its surroundings until the French Revolution. During the Revolution, the castle was declared "national property" and is administered "internally" by Brother Louis, the only survivor of the Community.
-1791-1818: sale to citizen Monmessin, then various owners.
-1819 Its last owner, Denis Lyon Berliet offered it to his friend John Van Risamburgh. For the first time in its history, the castle welcomes the Dutch within its walls. He was the son of a Dutch emigrant family, an artist and furniture maker. The castle was his favorite source of inspiration, Van Risenburgh immortalized the castle several times on canvas.
The father and his two brothers lived there until 1848 when they sold the castle to the family of Bernard Lavernette. This family belonged to the old Beaujolais aristocracy and owned several properties in the region.
-1866 Anatole Bernard Lavernette undertook a complete renovation of the château using materials taken from the Château de la Serrée. He moved there with his family ten years later. They transformed the castle, giving it a neo-Gothic look that was very fashionable at the time.
