A truly stunning castle for holiday rental

The Sleeping Beauty Castle !

Entirely renovated by the Kasteliades team between February 2022 and June 2023, the Château overlooks the charming village of Burnand. The castle, spanning approximately 900m² and built over periods from the 14th to the 19th century, is set within a 32-acre park, including 22 acres of forest. Perched in a dominant position, it offers superb views of the village, the valley and the hills beyond.

Its atypical architecture will captivate lovers of historical buildings. The ground-floor living rooms and some bedrooms have beautiful painted ceilings, either of Renaissance origin or restored in the 19th century. During the renovation we were careful to preserve the traditional materials from the past, such as old parquet floors, French ceilings, fireplaces, and period doors and windows. The decoration and furniture throughout have been chosen with the utmost care, creating a perfect blend of tradition and modernity.

An amazing property for holidays with family & friends

The fully restored castle features 10 luxurious double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a single bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, and a children's bedroom, accommodating a total of 21 people plus one child.

On the ground floor you'll find the Château's expansive, fully-equipped kitchen, which offers a wonderful opportunity for those who wish to hone their culinary skills, along with the lounge, dining-room, billiard room and poker room.

The 'wellness' area on the 2nd floor has a well-equipped gym and cardio-training section as well as a massage room, sauna and steam-room.

The beautiful park affords great privacy. The park immediately in front of the castle features a magnificent and ancient sycamore tree which provides perfect shade for the terraced outdoor dining area. The adjacent 5 x 11m heated swimming pool has beautiful views over the valley.

The spacious courtyard provides parking for up to 10 cars.

From the Château entrance, you can join hiking trails through the forests in Burnand and its surroundings. The area is also great for cycling.

The medieval town of Saint-Gengoux-le-National, just 5 minutes away, offers all amenities, including restaurants, a supermarket, bakers, and a butcher. Tournus, the gastronomic capital of southern Burgundy with its Michelin-starred restaurants, is about 20 minutes away.

We're sure that you'll fall in love with the unique charm of this castle and will enjoy unforgettable moments during your vacation.

David, from Chicago, USA, had this to say :

"Dear Christophe,
A week at your Château was life changing ! You have created a magical place - a haven from the madness of the world.
Thank you."

Maintenance

*Our heated saline pools - environmental and safety information

All Kasteliades swimming pools are saline treated pools, as opposed to treated with hard chemical chlorine. This is generally considered to be gentler on the environment as well as on your skin, eyes and hair ! The salinity of the pool water is ten times less than that of seawater and you hardly notice it.

The swimming pool uses a heat pump, the most environment friendly method for heating an outdoor pool. The pump extracts heat from the air to warm the pool water circulating through it. If the air temperature falls below 15°C, we cannot guarantee that the pool will be warm enough.

All Kasteliades swimming pools have a cover to protect the pool and ensure the safety of children when closed. The covers are either flat or raised structural elements.

Château de Burnand - a rich history

Situated near the medieval city of Saint-Gengoux-le-National, renowned in the 18th century as the King's favorite resort due to its 'Fountain of Youth', the Château's splendid glazed Burgundian tile roof gracefully rises above the village, earning it the nickname "Sleeping Beauty's Castle."

The Château's oldest part, the basement, dates back to the 13th or 14th century. Historical documents from the 15th century first mention the Cajod family, originating from Bresse and Mâcon, who became the lords of Burnand in 1453. Their emblem remains on the stone facade of the castle. In the 17th century, the castle served as a priory for an Augustinian monastic community for around 150 years, with various architectural details reflecting this period.

Chronology:

  • 13th-14th century: Origin of the basement and initial constructions.
  • 1525: First mention of the seigniory when Philibert Cajod, from a distinguished military family, acquired the estate.
  • 1625: A Cajod lord is killed in an Italian campaign while serving in the Uxelles regiment.
  • 1642: Charlotte de Brie, widow of Philibert III Cajod, donates the castle to the Congregation of Barefoot Augustinians.
  • 1643-1790: The castle, transformed into a priory, housed between 3 and 9 monks who managed the estate until the French Revolution. During the Revolution, it was declared "national property" and administered by Brother Louis, the sole surviving monk.
  • 1791-1818: Sold to citizen Monmessin and then various owners.
  • 1819: Denis Lyon Berliet, the last owner, gifted it to his friend John Van Risamburgh, a Dutch artist and furniture maker. Van Risamburgh, inspired by the château, frequently depicted it in his artwork. He and his two brothers resided there until 1848, when they sold it to the Bernard Lavernette family, part of the old Beaujolais aristocracy.
  • 1866: Anatole Bernard Lavernette began a complete renovation of the château using materials from the Château de la Serrée, moving in with his family ten years later and giving the castle its fashionable neo-Gothic appearance.
