The Château is infact a square manor house but due to the two towers on the front of the house the property can be called a château. Typical of the mid 19th century style, the château is in fact much older. Over the centuries it has been altered and at one time even partly destroyed. This was followed by an almost total reconstruction in the 19th century.
During our renovation work, we have discovered here and there evidence that the site has been inhabited since the Middle Ages !The only evidence of this past which is still intact is a vast building with impressive beams reminding one strangley of the grain store at Cluny.
In the 12th century Cluny owned the St Marcel Priory aswell as numerous others properties in the surrounding area. These properties can be found on a map, dating back to 1649, with the name ‘la Tarte’ which is the deformation of the 'tertre' name for a rise in the land (185m above sea level). This is the only area of higher land in the Lans area.
There is every reason to believe that the property was designed with defense as a priority, in times when bandits were rife in the area and security was a major problem.Transformed numerous times, the château has also seen countless famlilies passing through.
Due to ancient archives, we know that the château belonged to the Marquise of Thésut from 1582 to 1765. It was then in the hands of the Denon family, a descendant of whom was the famous Egyptologist and director of the Museums of France, Dominique-Vivany Denon (1747-1825).
A great traveller, he never stayed at the Château de Lans despite holding the title of ‘Lord of Lans’ like his ancestors. Denon accompanied his ancient uncle to the Egypt Compaign. He took part in the battles of Austerlitz, Essling and Eylau where he lost an arm. At his death in 1868 one of his daughters, the Countess of Duranti, had the château rebuilt as it stands today. Her son, at his death in 1886, donated the château to an important figure in the Châlon-sur-Saône society.
His descendants decided to sell the property to Kasteliades in January 2008.
